Saint Unknown

from Saint Unknown by Frances Smith

lyrics

The falling of the hard born against the night's edge
leaves the loved alone and frees the end
and they walk back through the soft glow
faded in the sun, and it starts to show
and amber, in it's water, colours all below

I thought I saw him standing there before me
and he had been a shadow beneath the photocells
unfolded the paper rolled, and unrolled, and rolled
he'd paved, created, stayed alive, and tried to die
while each bitter leaf there survives, it's still alive

Chorus

The stranger and the pilgrim stood
like danger and willing washed
by the stream of pain of saint unknown
with the gambler and the wooden cross

The flickering flame, orange strange, prescription
lit the bending iron but could not change the game
in the contract he had signed, unnamed, ungrown
he pulled his body like a heavy load, low
across the stones that submit to all

And the laying of the long night's end
had stories that won't begin again
and the earth had turned itself around
and I'm older now, and losing ground, then
are we entering another dream

Repeat chorus

Bridge

The heat was spinning in the doorway
closed upon the morning thaw before
the power was held within it's jaws exposed
I faded into another view
and I'm a stranger but I forgot I knew
the counting down great faster above
as into the street space silence dropped
smashed like a fragile broken clock
while time, it seemed, mattered no more
and there he was, he was saint unknown

The stranger and the pilgrim stood
like danger and willing washed
by the stream of pain of saint unknown
by the stream of pain of saint unknown
by the steam of pain of saint unknown
with the gambler and the wooden cross
