Silver Ship
03:33
|
|||
And the wants and needs of someone else
were written in the shade and light
of the tree that lost it's leaves
when the sun shared itself a little less
And a man on the street was lost
I heard his voice and then he left
they'll take every part of you then can
were the words, the sound, he laid on the ground
And you said you saw a silver ship
shining in the b\y last night
bathing in the waves that rocked
the gentle bodies sinking down
and you said you'd be my only one
if I'd help you find the silver ship
They'd been crying for the dream again
in the house there was no trace
of the pictures held, admired, then lost
behind a door they'd closed and locked
And you said you saw a silver ship
yeah you said you saw a silver ship
shining in the bay last night
shining in the bay last night
and you said we'd sail away in it
yeah you said we'd sail away in it

And on and on
03:21
|
|||
And he lay as father to the broken day
he would hold the light above him
until it shone, until it shone
on his eyes blue and bold
and lost again
There's often truth hiding in the words
spoken dropped and lying unheard
he talked of love, and talked of love
and the grey sky was cold
and strong again
Will you be with me when the fear has gone away
and I can stand beside the road
that tears apart this little town
and travels on and on and on and on and on and on
And there was a hill that rose above them all
the landscape that a love disturbs
holds the peace, and holds the peace
alive and green and old
and found again
Will you be with me then
when wider worlds are
reckoning and count the
change received
that tears apart this hidden sound
and travels on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on

Gibraltar Hill
04:26
|
|||
From within the silence that I made
I lived a while on Gibraltar Hill
heard the wind sing all night long
seems even it had heard you'd gone
Everywhere the leaves have been lost
they just fell when the winter came to call
and the old walls crack a little more
as the sun barely melts the ice at all
Chorus
Seems the only way to get through this
is to forget the days now gone and wish
and I wish I wish I wish I could make
those old days into days not yet lived
There's a spire, and a prayer, and a choir
close to the sky where the ground is higher
and I saw them chasing angels away
as they ran through the night like a fire
Bridge
And the thorns upon the trees grew sharp
and the the wood is hard beneath the ice
and the breaking of those chains was good
though I knew it would end in pain like this
repeat chorus

It's the seventh day of February
and all is quite cold
but the sun rises earlier
than it did yesterday
There are old days that linger
long after they've gone
and the first day of spring
it lives on and on
They were dancing against the shadows
that we'd laid in their paths
and I felt the sweet sound
as they moved around
They'll take the land back from us
when we love it no more
and the rain will wash the traces
of our wrong hearts away
And they always have been dancing
and worn the sweet may in their hair
as they search for lost meadows
in the light as it glows
And it's the seventh day of February
and I heard the grass grow
as it said if you don't love me
then I'll love those who did

Painted the Garden
03:40
|
|||
You painted the garden it was overgrown
you said you saw the picture shown
when the moon was all aglow
looking down through the window's pane
and the oil in your hands
oh, it knows it knows
Love is hard when it holds you tight
and you can't do anything right
it traps and burns you and leaves you sad
but you'll be freer in the hazy light
that dances around outside memories
and I want the scene you show, you know
Night draws the snow across the road
it's a picture loved and then it goes
and you kept asking to be believed
with those hunting days left revealed
that carried you away angry free
told me you're still alive in the snow the snow
And any love that needs to win won't win
if this is the hurt that winning brings
and you'll paint the garden again you say#
yeah you'll paint the garden one golden day
and the oil will feel sweet and soft
when you know you love it and it knows you know

There's a wind from the east tonight
and she said she needed light
didn't want the dark to chase
away his face, and she'd be brave
But he always was the one who talked
and now she really missed his voice
she said he wasn't wrong or right
just that perfect had never come her way
Chorus
And she said he'd said wait, just a little while longer
and I'll bring the answers
wrapped in sweet flowers, and without anger
I've been falling like a feather (s)he'd say
sometimes lying, sometimes drowning, sometimes flying away
and I could promise to be stronger
but he said, wait, just a little while longer
Night was drifting into day again
she said he'd said he'd tried to be a little kinder
but he lost himself like reflections in windows
he was looking in, at him looking out, at him, looking in at him
In the room she looked at me
said do you want another cup of tea
when he's gone I feel so alone I lie
awake in bed so long I think I could die
And she said he said wait
yeah she said he said wait
oh she said he said wait
just a little while longer
Bridge
Oh there's always someone who says he's bad
and truth is there's times it's been very hard
but you're just a friend for a little while
but without him I'm lonely mostly all the time
repeat chorus

Farndon Field
03:48
|
|||
They cut her down in Farndon field
she'd been the gatherer of herbs
that she lay across the floors
where the marching men would walk
for victory, and defeated, passed her by
right or wrong
She'd been there to make the scented night
dressed in words, and songs
but there their bodies lay
the grass was wet with blood
no one could bury them that day
night moved on
One hundred women without names
had followed a court, a king, a train
but in the righteousness of minds
their deaths were justified, and lines
of bodies left to decay
light was gone
By morning were they found or lost
no words were hard beside the cross
that in the churchyard stood
with too many graves that must be dug
who would bury nameless souls
fight goes on

Rain Dances Down
04:29
|
|||
Tonight no rain's going to come
and take the heat from the sun
and I walked with your words
spilling into the street I was on
Through the dryness felt the softest
waves asking to be saved
where the gate to the garden
was locked was dark was wrong
The non-believer stood still
wrapped in weapons called truth
that she fired without thought
of her lives came alive
And she wasted her time
trying to win over the world
she was shooting me down
and for a while there was ground
But there was love to be found
where the river sings without sound
and the path winding down
was where we went, where we went
There rain dances in the dark
as the dry grasses that shade
the linen like leaves
of the dreams that we weaved
and I can feel what you feel
and the sky holds the stars
and you're holding the world
and you said you'd give it to me
and for a while it seemed real
as the rain dances down
yeah the rain dances down

Broken Journey
06:12
|
|||
Broke the journey in an old town
no one there but a tall man
looking like he'd been working
for a time that had long been gone
and the night was awful cold
And there he rested his hands of gold
shining sweet, and shining cold
and I laid my head down beside the wall
thought I heard a wild bird call
through the night and that was all
Chorus
There's no one else will love you like I did
and no one else will give you what I did
and no one else knows how it feels
to be so lonely that you can't even hold
the broken journey, as on it goes, like I do
And I stayed a long while here
by the heat of the fire, and fear
and the gathering of clouds
outside was heavy and hard
oh there's grey inside, beneath, and above me
And when the storm it came down
it flooded the streets and then
oh I couldn't walk away any more
and on the broken journey I had to stay
can drown the streets but not the memories
And I thought that I would sometimes win
sometimes change, and sometimes sink
but I never thought that this would break
with you so gone, and the night so dark and long
repeat chorus
