A Better Past

from Fifty Ninety demos 2020 by Frances Smith

/

lyrics

Chasing sinners brought him down
he caught their ashes in his hands
until the weight was overwhelming
as they were spilling free from his hands
oh that willful beauty was a curse
and worse it was a chain
that trapped him always in a game
that lured him lost and then ensnared

Wrapping duty in his arms
he laid her by the bridge that crossed
the river flooding with the water
pouring over and he left them there
but not to drown he couldn't stand that awful sound
couldn't bring that curtain down
it was the past that kept him burning
for a future always stolen too

And this is what I think I am
and this is what I dreamt I was
with dangerous ideas dancing
there across the floor
filled with passions raging
empty and free

And he rages for a better past
that he tells me should have been
never thinking that it could be worse
or that the cold hearts might still shine
within the moon that's looking down
at the ghost who holds a future
like a poisonous snake
and there they dance
